Construction Labour Relations In Ontario - The Basics

This 6-hour course/workshop delivered in (2) 3-hour modules has been developed to introduce project managers, coordinators, construction business owners and buyers of construction services including their consultants to the complex world of construction labour relations in Ontario.

This basics course is designed as a precursor to the more in-depth Fundamentals of Construction Labour Relations course developed and delivered by the Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS).

Attendees who are engaged in labour relations as primary to their role, are encouraged to pursue the OCS Fundamentals course following this basics course. Designed in legal ease and presented from a practitioners perspective, not a complex labour lawyers perspective, the course will take attendees through the following general topics:

  1. Certification of Employers and the Role of Accredited Employer Bargaining Agencies in Ontario
  2. The purpose and functions of the Ontario Labour Relations Board for construction in Ontario
  3. Collective agreement basics and grievances
  4. Various local and provincial bargaining practices and protocols

Including over 30 links to resources, terms and definitions. This course is a must have to new entrants in the unionized employer role for the general, trade contractor or project owner.

Outcomes include: 

  1. Ability to easily locate must-have information pertaining to constructionlabour relations in Ontario
  2. Basic knowledge of terms used in collective bargaining
  3. Improved communication with business managers
  4. How the OLRB works, its mandate and grievance resolution process
